Overview

Occuring in Europe from Scandinavia and north Russia southwards, Alder is a tree belonging in the birch family, which is common throughout the British Isles and found in north Africa and western Asia.

There is no distinction in colour between Alder sapwood and heartwood, which is formed only in trees of advanced age - the wood being a dull, light reddish-brown colour, of fine-texture without lustre, and relatively light in weight (about 530 kg/m3 when dried).

It is easy to work and finish provided tools are kept sharpened, and takes glue, stains and polish, and nails and screws satisfactorily.
