Afzelia is known many names, mainly Doussie, and grows extensively in West, Central & East Africa, occurring in the dense evergreen forests, but also common in the savanna and coastal forests of East Africa.

The pale straw to whitish Afzelia sapwood is easily differentiated from the reddish brown heartwood and has medium lustre. Some pores contain a yellow dyestuff which, under moist conditions, can discolor textiles, paper, or other cellulosic materials.

Afzelia veneer grain is often irregular and interlocked and the wood has a coarse texture, which finishes to a high polish, although although it can be difficult to stain where pores contain yellow deposits and grain filling is sometimes desired.
