Goncalo Alves is also known as Palo de Cera, Palo de Culebra, Gusanero, Gateado, Guarita and Guasango. It is a common tree in the upland forests of many regions from Mexico to Brazil.

The 5-10cm wide Goncalo Alves sapwood is greyish to brownish-white and sharply demarcated from the heartwood, which is russet brown, orange-brown, or reddish brown to red with irregular, medium to very dark brown stripes when freshly cut, becoming brown, red, or dark reddish brown with nearly black stripes after exposure to air.

Goncalo Alves veneer grain varies from straight to interlocked and wavy and the texture is fine to medium and uniform. It finishes very smoothly, and takes a high natural polish. The wood has no distinctive odour or taste and often has a striking figure caused by irregular dark longitudinal bands.
