Hemlock grows extensively in the US and Canada, from Alaska to California and from New England to Alabama.
The the sapwood of Hemlock is not distinctly separated from the heartwood, which is generally pale brown with a reddish hue, but may be slightly lighter in colour, although both can sometimes be almost white with a purplish tinge, with the sapwood (generally around 2-3cm wide) slightly lighter than the heartwood.
Hemlock veneer is coarse and uneven in texture and dark streaks are often found in the lumber, which are caused by hemlock bark maggots.
